When it comes to parenting styles, we look at them within the scope of control (over the child) and nurturing (supporting, encouraging, caring). It is desired to have a balance between control and nurture when parenting.
One of the best known theories of parenting style was developed by Diana Baumrind. She proposed that parents fall into one of four categories:
- indulgent or permissive (allowing their children to do whatever they wish)
- authoritarian (telling their children exactly what to do)
- authoritative (providing rules and guidance without being overbearing)
- uninvolved (disregarding the children, and focusing on other interests)
More recent parenting styles include Helicopter Parenting, Tiger Moms, and Snowplow Parents.
